Brynteg School in Bridgend, Wales has recently refurbished its tired and dated linoleum floor in the main sports hall.
The comprehensive school is one of the largest secondary schools in Wales, and with its proud sporting heritage - former pupils include rugby stars JPR Williams and Gavin Henson – it was looking for a sports surface that could meet the stringent demands of the sports hall and future-proof the interior for generations to come. Sporting activities in the hall include basketball, netball, cricket, badminton, table tennis and five-a-side football.
Gerflor, the flooring specialist, was contacted by the school in late 2020 and invited to provide a feasibility survey assessing the needs of the facility and estimate a suitable replacement floor.
Tony Thorne, Gerflor Specification Manager, South Wales, explained: “Adam Rosser, who is Head of PE at Brynteg, was extremely concerned that their existing linoleum sports floor had become unsafe for its users. It was approximately 26 years old and despite many attempts to repair it over the years, many areas could not be replaced.”
The school was familiar with Gerflor as it already had large areas of Gerflor Tarasafe Ultra safety flooring installed throughout the school and Gerflor’s Mipolam flooring fitted in the science labs.
The funding was secured in the spring of 2021 from Bridgend Council, and Puma Floors won a competitive tender process, along with Biddle Sport, which was to manage the line marking.
Gerflor supplied its Olympic pedigree Taraflex® Performance sports flooring in ‘Maple’ with ‘Lagoon’ borders, together with its Taraflex® Bateco protection system for the 600 sqm of the re-fit.
Matthew Graves, Commercial Director of Cardiff-based Puma Floors, commented: “Working in collaboration with Gerflor, we were able to supply a complete solution fit for purpose for the project.”
Gerflor’s Thorne added: “One of the reasons we were specified is that there are over 100 Taraflex installations in South Wales alone, and these are endorsements to the high quality that new customers can expect from us.
“The school also chose to specify our Taraflex Bateco, as they wanted to protect their new floor when the hall is used for non-sporting activities such as to hold exams in the main sports hall.”
Taraflex® Bateco is a moveable solution for protecting multi-sports floors falling on non-sporting activities. It can be unrolled over the floors and rolled up again before resuming sports activities, and is made from 100% post manufacturing recycled waste.
Puma’s Graves added: “We have installed both Taraflex and Bateco previously, and they are extremely easy products to work with. The sports hall now looks amazing, and the client is delighted with the final finish.”
