Morgan Sindall completes £13m state-of-the-art school in Aberdeen

Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure successfully handed over a new state-of-the-art £13m school to Aberdeen City Council in time for the start of the 2018 academic year.

Stoneywood School, located in the Bucksburn area in the north of Aberdeen, was built on the site of the former Bankhead Academy, which was demolished following a fire in 2012. It is funded through the Council's five-year Capital Programme.

The energy-efficient site consists of a two stream primary school and 60 place nursery, offering a new home for the school’s 434 existing pupils. It contains 16 classrooms within the single-storey building, each having direct access to the external landscape, which includes a sensory garden, an orchard, a variety of sports facilities and a new 4G synthetic pitch. The building also features a library, flexible teaching areas and a sensory room to deliver a modern working environment for both pupils and staff.

In addition it utilises solar UV panels and low energy central heating.

The power of collaboration

Stuart Parker, managing director of Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure in Scotland, said, “Stoneywood is the culmination of many months of collaborative work between the school, the council and all of the consultants involved. Everyone involved can take pride in transforming a once derelict site into a modern school fit for the 21st century - and one which will prove a valuable addition to the education offering in the area for generations to come”.

Director of architects Scott Brownrigg’s Edinburgh studio, Alex Donaldson added, “Stoneywood School is a potent example of the power of open and inclusive collaboration. Aberdeen City Council had a clear vision for Stoneywood and the Scott Brownrigg team and Morgan Sindall worked closely with the Council and key stakeholders to ensure this vision became a reality”
