Lighting solution for the North School’s new Muga

THORN Lighting has provided the floodlighting for the new Muga, all-weather pitch at The North School at Ashford in Kent. The overriding factors in the brief for the lighting were performance, efficiency and reliability, coupled with the short lead time that was required plus the service and support provided by Thorn’s team throughout out the project. Thorn were also able to supply “bird spikes” for the luminaires that act as a deterrent to birds whose excrement can damage the paint and create corrosion.

The school has excellent facilities for physical education and sport, and now boasts an all-weather pitch, extensive fields, outdoor basketball courts, a climbing wall, an indoor gymnasium and sports hall, as well as a fitness studio. The new sports pitch has markings for football and hockey and forms an important part of the overall modernisation of the school’s facilities.

Mounted on existing columns, Thorn’s Champion LED floodlights provide strong uniformity and lit effect providing a clear and concise playing surface for users. Champion floodlights are ideal for small sports stadia and general areas where the control of light pollution is critical. The adjustable stirrup delivers a number of possible mounting positions and ease of installation is enhanced by the availability of a reverse mounting stirrup accessory which offers a number of possible mounting positions.

The Champion luminaire gives an asymmetric distribution whilst the tilted glass enclosure enables improved light output. Additionally, the optic also ensures a cut-off control for light output. The bird deterrent is a support covered with spikes, which is mounted on top of the floodlight to prevent birds landing.

The new pitch is important for the development of sporting success in the facility and the enhancement of the school’s outstanding reputation for sport. Tighting solution has also delivered high energy savings and low maintenance, superior uniformity and lit effect plus no downtime due to lamps failing.
