How does circularity improve student well-being?

It’s no surprise we are seeing a drive towards sustainable, eco-friendly schools, now more than ever we need to lower our carbon emissions to protect the planet, to support future generations.

In the education sector, it’s important to have spaces that promote student well-being, all the while supporting staff productivity. We need to design and create healthier, safer, and more inclusive spaces, that achieve the highest standards of sustainability.  Green building labels, such as: BREEAM, LEED and WELL, provide set guidelines and standards that will help you achieve a sustainable outcome and at Tarkett we pay particular attention to those that focus on indoor air quality, water and energy consumption and waste management.

Your flooring choice can have a significant impact here. With today’s challenges to limit and reduce the embodied and operational carbon emissions of a building, your schools design scheme should ensure that the floor you install contains good materials, which are durable and just as importantly can be recycled post-use.

School purse strings are tight, and budgets are having to stretch further, costs must be carefully considered and optimised. Certain elements, such as floors, should not be based solely on the initial purchase and installation cost, but also take in to account the ongoing costs of cleaning and maintaining. The truth is acquisition and installation typically represent only 10% of a floor’s lifetime cost. The other 90% is down to maintenance. So durable, reparable, and easy to clean floors will not only provide a better learning environment for students but will also support the facilities operational budget.

Tarkett’s commitment to closing the loop on waste to preserve our planets natural resources, along with our drive to recycle not downcycle supports all our multi-material products – from linoleum, to carpet, vinyl, sport and wall surfaces.

Ross Dight, Sustainability Director for Tarkett UK & Ireland recommends a range of eco-friendly flooring solutions that are suitable for all areas of education facilities, that help schools achieve their net zero ambitions. These collections are part of Tarkett’s Circular Selection, solutions that are best-in-class when it comes to sustainable criteria's such as: good materials, phthalate-free, optimal VOC level and recyclable post use.
