The completion of the £44m new build Largs Campus, Ayrshire, in time for the 2018-2019 academic year marked a significant turning point for education in North Ayrshire.
The team
The ambitious state-of-the-art project was delivered by infrastructure partnership, hub South West Scotland and it is one of the largest the partnerships it has ever undertaken. It reflects it’s key aim to invest in communities across South West Scotland and to build better local services.
The scheme was designed by Edinburgh-based architectural practice, JMArchitects.
It was constructed under a design, build, finance and maintenance contract which was led by main contractor, Morrison Construction after it was appointed to the scheme in 2016. Following a tender process, Morrison Construction appointed innovative building services design and installation specialist, Castle Building Services to provide and install a full range of mechanical and electrical services.
The design
Bringing about a new education era, the 19,606 sqm campus incorporates four existing schools - Largs Academy, Brisbane, Kelburn and St Mary’s Primary- providing a modern and contemporary learning environment second to none for some 2,000-plus students on one site.
The Campus has two capacity theatres one with 250 seats the other with 350 seats, a gym hall which is believed to be the biggest indoor school gym in the UK, a synthetic seven-a-side pitch and multi-use games areas.
Under the direction of Castle, the completed building features several energy efficient technologies including roof-mounted photovoltaic panels and wood pellet-fuelled biomass boilers, both of which will contribute to a significant reduction in The Campus’ energy consumption.
The Campus has been constructed on a steeply sloping site which transitions from a two-storey building to four-storeys, with principle learning plazas at its heart.
